State job market has a golden opportunity

It seems that Florida's job market is entering an era of golden years and glory days...the lowest unemployment rates in five years, job growth and an influx of young talent. However, looking into the not-so-distant future, it becomes clear that Florida's labor supply and demand simply will not align as demographic shifts take hold. Indeed, 76 million baby boomers will retire in the next decade, replaced by a generation about half that size. Florida has seen a resurgence of job growth this year, adding 68,800 jobs and bringing the unemployment rate down to 3.9 percent - the lowest since December 2000. At the same time, the state has the highest percentage of people age 65 and older of any state (17 percent). As those baby boomers begin settling into retirement, that number will skyrocket to 27 percent by 2030, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
