Joint development of electric vehicle parts by BMW and Jaguar Land Rover aims to lower production prices. With BMW planning 12 full-electric models to roll out by 2025, shared development costs may promise greater margins. Currently BMW’s only electric vehicle is the i3 hatchback. Jaguar Land Rover’s first EV is the Jaguar I-Pace. BMW recently set a contract to supply an 8-cylinder engine to Jaguar Land Rover. BMW once owned the Jaguar and Land Rover brands in 1994. Now Jaguar Land Rover is owned by India’s Tata Group when purchased for $2.3 billion in 2008.
Renault merger offer withdrawn by Fiat Chrysler ends prospects of creating world’s third biggest automaker. Renault directors failed to reach a verdict on FCA’s May 27 merger proposal at a board meeting which occurred Wednesday. The French government, which holds 15% of shares in Renault, said it wouldn’t approve Fiat Chrysler’s merge proposal without Nissan’s guarantee that Renault’s alliance with Nissan would survive. Investment manager CIAM voiced doubts, saying the merger would undervalue Renault.
Tesla sets the price of its new pickup truck below $50,000, on track to compete with Ram. Elon Musk has boasted that the capabilities of the Tesla pickup will be unmatched. The truck range is expected to be between 400 and 500 miles. It will have all-wheel drive with a motor for each axle. The suspension was also noted by Musk to dynamically adjust according to its load. Musk in a tweet mentioned that the truck could also tow 300,000 pounds. No official images of the truck have been posted, but Musk says the truck has a certain sci-fi appearance.
Volkswagen invests $50 billion in electric vehicle production through 2028 in apology for Dieselgate. The company is doing an entire rebranding campaign with its recent ad release called “Hello Light,” which seeks to convince consumers to look past their old business motives and on to their electric future. They updated their iconic VW logo to be black and transparent white to symbolize their movement into the electric vehicle age.H
